Tuberculosis remains one of the most consequential gaps between what medicine can do and what the world actually delivers. A comprehensive 33-year accounting of TB's toll — covering 204 countries and parsing the disease by HIV status, drug resistance, age, and sex — arrives at a pivotal moment when international health funding cuts threaten to reverse hard-won gains, making this baseline dataset indispensable for advocacy and policy.
Drawing on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, investigators deployed the Cause of Death Ensemble model and DisMod-MR 2.1 to reconstruct TB mortality and morbidity trajectories from 1990 through 2023, integrating vital registration, surveillance, verbal autopsy, and minimally invasive tissue sampling data globally. This study's extension through 2023 captures the post-COVID disruption period, during which TB case detection collapsed and treatment interruptions surged in high-burden settings.
