How far an older adult ventures from home on a typical week turns out to be one of the most information-dense signals available about their overall health trajectory. The geographic range a person habitually traverses — their "life space" — integrates physical capacity, psychological resilience, and social connectedness into a single measurable dimension, making it a potentially powerful clinical screening tool that most routine geriatric assessments currently ignore.

This concept analysis, drawing on 46 articles spanning nearly nine decades of literature (1936–2025) across seven major databases, used Rogers' evolutionary framework to rigorously define life space in community-dwelling older adults. The analysis identified three core attributes: dynamic variability over time, multidimensionality (encompassing spatial extent, frequency of movement, and independence of travel), and the continuous interaction between a person's intrinsic abilities and their external environmental demands. Antecedents shaping life space were organized into four domains — individual characteristics, physical health, psychological status, and social factors. Consequences proved to run in both directions: broader life space was associated with more walking, reduced fall risk, preserved cognition, and better quality of life, while contracted life space predicted cognitive decline, elevated hospital readmission rates, loneliness, and increased mortality risk.

What makes this synthesis particularly useful is not any single new finding but the conceptual standardization it provides. Life space has been measured inconsistently across studies — sometimes as a simple radius, sometimes weighted by frequency and assistive-device use — which has limited cross-study comparability. By anchoring a formal definition, this analysis creates scaffolding for more rigorous prospective research. The practical implication for geriatric medicine is that a brief life-space assessment during routine visits could serve as an early warning system for functional decline, potentially preceding detectable deficits on standard cognitive or mobility tests. The primary limitation is that the included literature is largely observational and cross-sectional, meaning causal directionality remains uncertain — restricted life space may reflect declining health rather than cause it. Still, as a low-burden, clinically accessible mobility metric, life space deserves considerably more attention in longevity-focused care models.
