A persistent assumption in public health discourse — that alcohol-free alternatives carry a premium price — turns out to be largely inverted in actual retail markets. For adults trying to moderate consumption, this pricing reality removes one commonly cited barrier and reframes the economics of choosing no/lo options.
Analyzing over 21,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) across Great Britain using 2024 point-of-sale data from market research firm Circana, researchers applied quantile regression to compare median prices of no/lo drinks (≤1.2% ABV) against their regular-strength counterparts across five beverage categories: beer, cider, wine, spirits, and ready-to-drinks (RTDs). Results were striking: median available prices for no/lo products were consistently lower than regular-strength equivalents — beer by 19%, wine by as much as 44% — with statistical significance at p < 0.001 across most categories. The exception was RTDs, where pricing dynamics appear more complex. Analyses were stratified by container type, multipack size, and container volume, with pricing expressed per standard serving to ensure comparability.
This finding carries meaningful implications. It challenges the 'health tax' narrative often applied to better-for-you food and beverage products, and suggests that at least in off-trade retail settings, no/lo drinks may actually be accessible to price-sensitive consumers. However, several caveats temper the enthusiasm: this is cross-sectional data from a single year and one country, capturing only shop-based (off-trade) sales, not bars or restaurants where premiumization of no/lo is anecdotally more pronounced. The analysis also cannot account for differences in product quality, flavor perception, or whether consumers actually substitute these products for alcohol or simply add them to existing consumption. The substantial wine price gap may partly reflect that no/lo wines tend to be lower-quality products rather than premium dealcoholized alternatives. Still, as an epidemiological snapshot of a rapidly growing product category, this is a valuable and frequently misunderstood data point for public health planners.
