For the millions of children who experienced pandemic-era school closures, the educational damage may run far deeper and longer than early recovery data suggested. A decade-long developmental study from Ghana offers one of the most temporally comprehensive pictures yet of how a global crisis reshapes children's cognitive trajectories — and which protective conditions can slow the damage.

Tracking 2,901 Ghanaian children from 2015 through 2024 — spanning ages 5 to 13 — researchers applied piecewise latent growth curve modeling to isolate math skill trajectories across three distinct periods: pre-pandemic, during school closures, and the post-reopening years. Math growth decelerated significantly during closures, and while partial recovery occurred afterward, children did not fully return to pre-pandemic developmental slopes. Critically, the analysis identified three protective factors that buffered against loss: household wealth, cognitively stimulating caregiving practices at home, and attendance at private schools. Risk factors examined showed less consistent patterns across the cohort.

This research deserves careful attention for several reasons that extend beyond Ghana. First, the nine-year longitudinal design is rare in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) educational research, lending unusual statistical power to detect trajectory shifts. Second, the finding that recovery was only partial challenges optimistic short-term rebound narratives that circulated in 2022–2023. Third, the identification of cognitively stimulating caregiving as protective is particularly significant — it suggests that home learning environments may partially substitute for formal schooling in ways that wealth alone does not fully explain. However, key limitations apply: the sample is drawn from a single country with a specific educational infrastructure, findings may not generalize to other LMIC contexts, and the study is observational, preventing causal conclusions about which interventions would have changed outcomes. For health-conscious adults monitoring child development, this study underscores that learning setbacks from acute crises likely require sustained multi-year support rather than short-term remediation.
