The common assumption that exercise must be vigorous to deliver cognitive and emotional benefits is directly challenged by new neuroimaging evidence. For the millions of adults who avoid running because intensity feels prohibitive — whether due to age, fitness level, or chronic condition — this finding reframes the minimum effective dose of aerobic movement in ways that could meaningfully expand participation.

In a randomized crossover design, 24 healthy adults completed either a 10-minute treadmill run at 35% of peak oxygen uptake (classified as very light intensity) or a seated rest session. Cognitive performance was assessed via the Stroop interference task, emotional state via the Two-Dimensional Mood Scale, and prefrontal cortical hemodynamics via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The slow-running bout produced statistically significant improvements in executive function (reduced Stroop interference time), elevated positive mood, and measurable oxygenation increases specifically in the left lateral prefrontal cortex — a region central to inhibitory control and working memory. A notable secondary finding was a positive correlation between head acceleration — the vertical oscillation characteristic of running gait — and pleasant mood, suggesting biomechanical inputs to subcortical reward pathways may play a mechanistic role distinct from metabolic load.

This study is small (n=24), single-session, and confined to healthy young adults, so generalizability to clinical populations or chronic effects remains untested. However, it sits within a growing literature showing that prefrontal activation can be elicited at sub-moderate intensities, complementing prior fNIRS work on walking and light cycling. The head-acceleration–mood correlation is intriguing and underexplored; it potentially implicates vestibular or somatosensory signaling rather than cardiovascular mechanisms alone. From a population-health standpoint, the 10-minute, very-low-intensity threshold is clinically accessible — practically a brisk shuffle — which, if replicated in larger and more diverse cohorts, could substantially lower the barrier to evidence-based movement prescriptions for mood and cognition.
