For the millions of women who cycle in and out of physical inactivity, injury is rarely discussed as a structural barrier — yet new cross-sectional evidence suggests it may be silently sidelining a significant proportion before they ever return to organized activity. Understanding who these women are, and what predicts their injury-affected status, could reshape how community sport programs recruit and retain participants.
Drawing on responses from 1,339 physically inactive women (defined as fewer than 150 minutes of activity per week) recruited through social sport programs in Victoria, Australia, the analysis found that 20.8% self-reported an injury as a barrier to participation. Among a subset who completed detailed injury questions, the knee (39.0%), lower back (29.9%), and ankle (24.7%) were the most commonly affected sites — a pattern consistent with musculoskeletal injury epidemiology in recreational sport populations. While univariate models flagged geographic location, parental status, education, and income as associated factors, multivariate logistic regression narrowed the independently significant predictors to lower income and low physical activity confidence. This convergence of financial constraint and self-efficacy as co-determinants is notable and suggests the barrier is psychosocial as much as it is physical.
The cross-sectional design limits causal inference — it cannot establish whether injury preceded inactivity or whether inactivity increased injury vulnerability, a classic chicken-and-egg problem in physical activity research. The sample is also geographically concentrated and drawn from women already engaged enough to enroll in social sport programs, potentially underrepresenting the most sedentary. That said, the finding that low confidence — not injury severity or type — independently predicts injury-affected status points toward a modifiable target. Interventions pairing low-cost program access with confidence-building components may address both barriers simultaneously. This is incremental but practically actionable research for community health planners.
