Researchers compared 60 pre-festival participants with 62 festival attendees using standardized measures of pain tolerance, pain sensitivity, pain unpleasantness, and heart rate variability (SDNN, a parasympathetic nervous system index). The full-sample confirmatory analysis found no significant group differences. However, an exploratory analysis that excluded participants exceeding a pre-defined threshold for heavy alcohol consumption revealed a statistically significant increase in pain tolerance among festival attendees (F(1,93) = 5.543, p = .021, Cohen's d = 0.501 — a medium effect size).
