The trial enrolled 60 adults diagnosed with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, randomizing participants to receive either psilocybin or placebo alongside a standardized psychological support protocol delivered within NHS infrastructure. The psilocybin group demonstrated statistically significant improvements in depressive symptom severity compared to placebo, with a tolerability profile characterized as good — meaning adverse events were manageable within the clinical setting. The NHS context is particularly notable: this is among the first Phase II-level RCTs to demonstrate feasibility and efficacy signals for psychedelic-assisted therapy within a publicly funded, real-world healthcare system rather than an academic research bubble.
This trial sits at an important inflection point in psychedelic medicine. Prior landmark work — including the COMPASS Pathways Phase IIb trial and Imperial College London studies — established proof-of-concept but raised questions about scalability and accessibility. By situating the intervention within NHS infrastructure, this study begins to answer whether psilocybin therapy could realistically reach underserved populations rather than remaining confined to high-cost private settings.
