A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 84 children aged 5–13 found that twice-daily chewable tablets combining boysenberry and apple (BerriQi) significantly reduced total URTI symptom severity (P=0.04) and shortened illness duration by roughly 3 days compared to placebo (8 vs. 11 sick days). Functional recovery was 79% more likely in the BerriQi group (HR=1.79; 95% CI: 1.09–2.91; P=0.02), though global illness severity did not reach statistical significance between groups.

This preprint — not yet peer-reviewed — adds to a growing body of evidence around polyphenol-rich whole-fruit extracts as immune modulators. Boysenberries are dense in anthocyanins and ellagitannins, compounds previously linked to antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, while apple polyphenols may provide synergistic antioxidant support. The 3-day reduction in sick days is clinically meaningful for families and schools, where absenteeism carries real social and economic costs. However, several cautions apply: the trial is small at 84 participants, conducted in a single age-band, and the commercial framing of the supplement warrants scrutiny around potential industry influence. The lack of significance on the primary global illness severity endpoint also tempers enthusiasm. Mechanistic data on immune biomarkers are absent. Until peer review stress-tests the methodology and conflict-of-interest disclosures, these promising results should be considered preliminary rather than practice-changing.
