How children and adolescents use past experiences to make reward-based choices turns out to depend critically on the quality—not just the quantity—of what they remember. This finding matters because it reframes childhood decision-making deficits not as failures of motivation or impulse control, but as downstream consequences of how episodic memory is organized and retrieved at different developmental stages.

The research, published in PNAS, examined how memory structure and precision evolve across middle childhood through adolescence and how those changes influence the deployment of retrieved episodes during reward decisions. Even a single brief experience was shown to influence choice behavior as early as middle childhood, but the fidelity with which that episode was encoded and later retrieved modulated how effectively it guided decisions. As memory precision increased with age, so did the sophistication of episodic-based decision strategies—suggesting the two systems co-develop rather than mature independently.

This work sits at an important intersection of developmental cognitive neuroscience and decision science. Prior research had established separately that episodic memory undergoes protracted development into late adolescence, and that reward-based decision making similarly matures across this period—but mechanistic links between the two had remained underexplored. By demonstrating that memory precision is a functional input to decision quality, this study offers a more integrated developmental model. A key limitation is that the study appears to rely on behavioral and computational measures rather than direct neural imaging, leaving the underlying hippocampal-prefrontal circuitry implicated. Additionally, cohort size and the artificial reward paradigms typical of lab-based child studies limit generalizability to real-world risk decisions. Nevertheless, the finding is conceptually important: interventions aimed at improving memory encoding specificity in children could have secondary benefits for decision-making competence—an incremental but genuinely integrative contribution to developmental science.
