Using a combination of ecological momentary assessment and functional MRI in awake infants, researchers mapped the cortical scene-processing network before children had acquired independent navigation skills such as crawling or walking. The results show that specialized scene-responsive regions — analogous to those well-characterized in adult visual cortex, including areas like the parahippocampal place area — are already functionally distinguishable in infancy. This implies that the foundational architecture for spatial scene recognition does not require the motor and navigational feedback loop long theorized to sculpt it.
This finding sits at an interesting intersection of developmental neuroscience and the nature-versus-nurture debate in perceptual specialization. Prior research on face processing has already suggested that some cortical selectivity is present very early in life, and this work extends a similar logic to scene processing — a domain previously thought more experience-dependent.
