This landmark GBD 2023 analysis arrives at a critical inflection point — just as global health funding reductions threaten the infrastructure underpinning TB control — making its granular, three-decade assessment of mortality, incidence, and drug resistance particularly consequential for policymakers and clinicians alike.

Drawing on vital registration records, surveillance systems, verbal autopsy data, and minimally invasive tissue sampling across 204 countries and territories from 1990 through 2023, the researchers deployed two sophisticated modeling platforms — the Cause of Death Ensemble model and DisMod-MR 2.1 — to simultaneously estimate TB incidence, prevalence, and mortality stratified by age, sex, HIV co-infection status, and drug-resistance profile.
