Over three decades of sustained global health investment have dramatically reshaped who dies from gut infections — yet the pace of progress has slowed precisely when it matters most, and millions of under-5 deaths remain preventable. The GBD 2023 systematic analysis covers 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023, quantifying incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for diarrheal diseases, enteric fever (typhoid and paratyphoid), invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella infections, and other intestinal infectious diseases.
