Accelerometry data from 2,809 adults in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (46-year follow-up) reveals stark occupational divides in how physical activity, sedentary time, and sleep are distributed across the day. Low-skill blue-collar workers logged significantly more physical activity during working hours than all three white-collar and high-skill blue-collar groups. However, during workday leisure hours, high-skill white-collar workers compensated with higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), a pattern that extended to non-workdays as well.
This compensation dynamic is critically important for public health messaging. The prevailing assumption that sedentary office workers need blanket encouragement to move more obscures a nuanced reality: blue-collar workers already accumulate substantial occupational activity, yet this may not translate into equivalent health benefits. Occupational physical activity and leisure-time physical activity appear to have different cardiometabolic and longevity profiles — a distinction increasingly supported by prior research suggesting that work-related physical exertion may paradoxically carry higher cardiovascular risk than equivalent leisure activity, possibly due to lack of recovery, sustained postures, or psychosocial stress. The compositional data analysis approach used here is methodologically appropriate, capturing trade-offs within the fixed 24-hour budget rather than treating behaviors in isolation. Limitations include the cohort's homogenous Finnish population (limiting generalizability), the single age snapshot at 46 years, and self-reported diary data for work hours. As a preprint not yet peer-reviewed, findings should be treated as preliminary. Still, this work meaningfully advances the case for occupation-specific physical activity guidelines.
