The Everyone EATS pilot study demonstrated that stool-derived DNA sequencing can reconstruct individual diets at species resolution and communicate findings meaningfully to non-clinical participants. Of 111 kits mailed, 80 were returned (72.1% return rate), achieving 100% sequencing success for plant DNA and 98.7% for animal DNA. Among 73 report recipients, all accessed their personalized Diet Data Return Report; 74% engaged interactively. Of 16 survey completers, 81.2% found reports easy to understand, 81.2% reported improved awareness of dietary variety, and 31.2% reported actual behavior change — with zero monetary incentive offered.
This work sits at an intriguing intersection of metagenomics, precision nutrition, and citizen science. Traditional dietary assessment tools — food frequency questionnaires, 24-hour recalls — are notoriously prone to recall bias. Stool DNA sequencing sidesteps subjective memory entirely, though the technology currently struggles with herbs, spices, seafood, and heavily processed foods, precisely the categories participants flagged as inaccurate. That limitation matters clinically: these are nutritionally significant food groups.
The 31% self-reported behavior change figure is provocative but should be interpreted cautiously — the feedback survey captured only 16 of 80 participants (20%), introducing severe selection bias toward the most engaged. Scalability, cost, and regulatory frameworks for returning genomic food data at population scale remain unaddressed. As a preprint not yet peer-reviewed, these preliminary findings could shift meaningfully after scrutiny. Still, the approach is genuinely novel — using curiosity as a participation driver without payment represents an underexplored recruitment model for nutritional genomics research.
