The act of deliberately striking the ball with the head — normalized at every level of play — may produce measurable neurological stress within hours, even in amateur athletes.
The study tracked blood concentrations of two distinct biomarkers following competitive match play in amateur soccer players: p-Tau217, a phosphorylated tau protein fragment increasingly associated with early Alzheimer's-related pathology, and S100B, an astrocyte-derived protein that leaks into circulation when the blood-brain barrier is compromised or glial cells are stressed. Critically, the researchers observed a dose–response relationship — meaning players who headed the ball more frequently showed proportionally higher elevations — lending biological plausibility to a causal rather than merely correlational interpretation.
What makes this finding particularly significant is the specificity of the biomarkers involved. S100B has long been used in emergency medicine as a concussion screening tool, but its elevation here occurred without any diagnosed concussive event.
