Mental health research has long been dominated by urban, high-income populations — making findings from 1,107 rural Ghanaian farmers both scientifically valuable and practically underrepresented. This study challenges the assumption that nature-mental health links are a Western phenomenon, and raises important questions about whether conservation policy could double as a public health intervention in climate-vulnerable regions.
Using a validated 15-item Nature-Based Mental Health scale covering stress, anxiety, sleep quality, coping capacity, and emotional resilience, researchers surveyed respondents across 16 communities — half within Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs), half outside. Nested ordered logistic regression revealed that CREMA residence was consistently associated with 75–120% higher odds of reporting good mental health (OR: 1.75–2.20, p < 0.001). Each additional weekly nature contact episode nudged odds upward by 6–7% (OR: 1.06–1.07), while every unit increase in distance from natural spaces reduced the likelihood of good mental health by roughly 15–16% (OR: 0.84–0.85). Age, livelihood diversification, and financial stress also emerged as significant predictors.
This work sits at an intriguing intersection of environmental psychology, conservation science, and global mental health. The established literature — primarily from Europe and North America — consistently associates green space access with reduced cortisol, improved affect, and lower depression risk. What this Ghanaian cohort adds is ecological: CREMAs are not passive green spaces but actively governed, community-managed conservation zones, suggesting that social cohesion and environmental stewardship may compound nature's psychological benefits beyond mere proximity effects. That said, the cross-sectional design precludes causal inference — communities self-select into conservation governance, and reverse causality (mentally healthier communities managing resources better) cannot be ruled out. The sample is also geographically narrow. Still, for researchers and policymakers working at the nexus of planetary health and mental wellbeing, this is a meaningfully original data point from a systematically undersampled population.
