As climate-driven disasters intensify, understanding who bears the heaviest psychological burden — and why — is no longer an academic question. The January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires created a rare natural experiment: a large, ongoing longitudinal panel that captured mental health data both before and after a major disaster event, enabling unusually rigorous causal inference compared with typical post-hoc disaster studies.

Drawing on monthly PHQ-4 assessments from 1,510 Los Angeles County adults across more than 31,600 respondent-month observations spanning late 2023 through the end of 2025, researchers used two-way fixed-effects models to isolate wildfire-associated changes in psychological distress. Approximately 9.5% of participants resided within official evacuation warning or order zones at wildfire onset. The analysis separately tracked anxiety and depression subscales, and crucially, examined how pre-existing social vulnerability factors — measured before the fires — modified the magnitude of mental health deterioration among those exposed.

This study's methodological strength is its longitudinal design with pre-disaster baselines, which sidesteps the recall bias that plagues most disaster mental health research. The fixed-effects approach also controls for stable individual characteristics, isolating fire-related change more cleanly than cross-sectional comparisons. That said, the sample — a probability-based internet panel — may under-represent the most socially marginalized residents who are simultaneously at greatest wildfire risk and least likely to participate in web-based panels, potentially compressing observed vulnerability gradients. The January 2025 fires were geographically concentrated, limiting generalizability to other wildfire contexts.

For the longevity and public health community, this work reinforces a growing evidence base linking acute climate events to lasting psychological harm, particularly among already-disadvantaged populations. Chronic psychological distress is independently associated with accelerated biological aging, elevated inflammatory markers, and poorer cardiovascular outcomes — meaning wildfire mental health effects may carry downstream physical health consequences well beyond the immediate disaster window. This study is confirmatory in framework but significant in its timeliness and rigor.
