Sleep deprivation is rarely framed as an organizational management problem — yet the conditions employers set around psychological safety may shape whether workers wake rested or exhausted. A growing body of occupational health research is now connecting workplace culture directly to sleep architecture, suggesting that corporate governance decisions ripple into bedrooms in measurable ways.

Drawing on cross-sectional data from 4,827 daytime wage workers enrolled in the fifth wave of the Korean Work, Sleep, and Health Study, researchers examined how Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) — a validated organizational metric capturing management's demonstrated commitment to employee psychological wellbeing — relates to sleep outcomes. PSC was stratified into low, moderate, and high-risk tiers. Workers in the high-risk (poorest PSC) category faced 22% higher odds of clinically poor sleep quality compared with those in the low-risk group (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.04–1.43), with standardized regression coefficients of −0.05 linking lower PSC to both reduced Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores and elevated Insomnia Severity Index ratings. Notably, vulnerability was not uniform: adults aged 60 and older, highly educated workers, full-time employees, and those without union representation showed amplified susceptibility to sleep disruption under low-PSC conditions.

This finding sits at an interesting intersection of occupational epidemiology and sleep medicine. The PSC construct has previously been tied to burnout, psychological distress, and presenteeism, but its independent link to sleep — after adjusting for age, sex, and occupation — adds a physiologically consequential downstream outcome to that list. The chronic stress pathway is a plausible mechanism: sustained psychosocial threat at work elevates cortisol and sympathetic nervous system activity, both of which are well-documented disruptors of sleep onset and continuity. The cross-sectional design is the study's central limitation, precluding causal inference and leaving open whether poor sleepers perceive their workplace climate more negatively. The Korean-specific sample also limits direct generalizability. Still, the large cohort and validated instruments make this a methodologically solid contribution — confirmatory of stress-sleep linkages, but novel in quantifying a specific organizational climate variable as the exposure.
