Psychological resilience — the capacity to adapt under pressure — is increasingly recognized as a modifiable trait, not a fixed personality characteristic. Understanding which everyday behaviors predict resilience, and through what mechanisms, has real implications for college health programs and broader adult wellness strategies. This study offers a structural model connecting diet and lifestyle to resilience, with psychological flexibility as a key interior pathway.

Using structural equation modeling on 401 U.S. college students (mean age 19, ~58% female), researchers identified several distinct pathways. Eating breakfast five or more times per week and limiting fast food to three or fewer weekly occasions were each associated with greater resilience, with the effect running specifically through enhanced psychological flexibility — the cognitive capacity to adapt thoughts and behaviors to shifting demands. Conversely, sleeping fewer than six hours nightly and identifying as female were linked to lower resilience through the same mediating mechanism. Separately, fish oil consumption four or more times weekly, daily exercise exceeding 20 minutes, and alcohol use showed direct associations with resilience independent of psychological flexibility, while marijuana use was the strongest negative direct predictor.

Several important caveats limit interpretation. The cross-sectional, self-reported survey design precludes causal inference — breakfast habits do not necessarily produce psychological flexibility; both could reflect underlying health-consciousness. The sample is young, predominantly female, and drawn from U.S. colleges via social media, limiting generalizability to older or more diverse adult populations. The alcohol finding — a positive association with resilience — almost certainly reflects confounding by social integration rather than any protective pharmacological mechanism and warrants skepticism. That said, the mediation model itself is methodologically coherent, and the consistent signal linking sleep deprivation and dietary quality to flexibility-mediated resilience aligns with established neuroscience linking circadian disruption and metabolic stress to impaired prefrontal function. This is confirmatory rather than paradigm-shifting work, but it usefully frames dietary behaviors as potential upstream levers for psychological outcomes.
