A 12-week telehealth program combining resistance training with 75g daily whey protein supplementation significantly improved functional strength in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) patients aged 76 years on average. The intervention group showed meaningful gains in chair stands (11 to 13 repetitions) and sit-to-stand speed (12.3 to 9.6 seconds) compared to protein-only controls, alongside improved quality of life scores. This represents a notable advance in post-cardiac intervention care, addressing a critical gap where 70% of TAVR patients enter procedures with compromised muscle mass that typically doesn't improve with valve replacement alone. The telehealth delivery model offers particular promise for older cardiac patients who face mobility barriers to traditional rehabilitation centers. However, the small sample size of 22 participants and lack of body composition measurements limit conclusions about muscle mass changes. The high adherence rates (>90%) suggest telehealth resistance training could democratize access to specialized cardiac rehabilitation, potentially reducing the substantial mortality risk associated with sarcopenia in this vulnerable population.
