Researchers analyzed 71 news articles documenting 36 distinct cases where individuals experienced severe psychiatric deterioration following generative AI chatbot use. Suicide deaths represented the most frequently reported outcome, with additional cases involving psychotic episodes, self-harm behaviors, and acute suicidal ideation. The review captured incidents from November 2022 onward, coinciding with widespread public adoption of conversational AI systems marketed for emotional support and companionship.
